Weekend split for Magicians, Jets

A week after a road trip to Springfield, the Minnesota Magicians returned to home ice in Richfield to play host to the Janesville Jets. The teams ended up sharing points with the Magicians winning on Friday 5-3 before the Jets closed out the series with a 6-3 win Saturday.

Hunter Longhi powered the offense for much of the weekend scoring twice in the win on Friday and one more the following night. His six-point weekend now has him leading the team in points with 16 in 12 games. The 19-year old, who is playing in his third NAHL season, has committed to play at Harvard in 2022-23.

Sam Jacobs also scored a pair in the 5-3 win. His 14 points is second best among team scoring. Trevor Kukkonen rounded out scoring while Brandon Milberg stopped 25 of 28 shots in the victory.

Saturday night did not go in the home teams favor, but it was competitive throughout. After a scoreless first the teams exchanged powerplay tallies midway through the second frame. Cam Boche netted his sixth of the season with helpers from Jon Bell and Will Schumacher. Janesville made it 2-1 at 14:05, but the Magicians evened things just :39 before intermission on a powerplay goal by Longhi. Gavin Best and Bell assisted on the play.

Three goals in the opening six minutes of the third was the difference this night. William Svenddal scored his first of the season at 16:53 making it 5-3, but the Jets added an empty net goal in the final minute to wrap up the two points.

Currently sporting a 7-5-0-0 record, the Magicians find themselves in third place of the NAHL Midwest Division. Springfield Jr. Blues (8-2-0-0) lead the division with Fairbanks Ice Dogs (7-2-0-1) a point behind.

Up next for the Magicians is a home-and-home series with the Minnesota Wilderness (5-2-1-0). The series begins on Friday in Richfield before the teams head north for a Saturday night clash in Cloquet.
