It was a perfect Minnesota morning at Palm Field. Sunny and 75-degrees when Air Freight Unlimited starting pitcher Graham Laubscher threw the first pitch at 10:00 AM. Over three overs later the game saw its first run scored – and a winner – as Kyle Halverson hit a two-out home run for the Air Freight walk-off victory.
Halverson came to the plate in the 15th batting 0-for-6 in the game. A rising senior at the University of St. Thomas, Haverson drove the second pitch he saw far over the left field fence to win the game.
The story of the game was the pitching battle between four men. Laubscher pitched the first nine innings for Air Freight, giving up eight hits and striking out 15 batters. He was replaced in the 10th by Jack Schnettler who gave up just one hit the last six innings to earn the victory.
Angels starter Mitchell Bauer pitched a scoreless 5 1/3 innings before being pulled for one-time Twins minor leaguer Matt Schuld. The 33-year old was brilliant for 9 1/3 innings before giving up the home run.
Air Freight Unlimited advance to the quarterfinals next Saturday when they will meet the winner of the Minnetonka Millers-TriCity Sharks game.
