Fort Frances Lakers won their fifth game in their season opening series against the Kenora Thistles 18U AAA on Sunday 5-1. Due to COVID-19 restrictions the Kenora AAA team along with the Thunder Bay Kings AAA of Hockey Northwestern Ontario have been included in the Superior International Junior Hockey League schedule.
Cade Mozell scored a hat trick while Ben Hoefler added a pair of goals for the Lakers. Matthew Dyck and Nakoda Thunderchief each provided two assists in the latest win, played at the Kenora Recreation Centre.
Goaltender Ethan Hein had a fairly light workload making 14 saves to record the win. It was the third victory for Hein who has stopped 49 of 51 shots (.961 save%) faced this season so far.
A third period powerplay tally scored by Reid Zurcan was the lone offensive highlight for the Thistles.
Kenora netminder Kaden King, who is still just 16 years old, has seen his stock rise throughout this five-game series. King made 49 saves following up on his scoreless 39-save effort in relief two days prior. In four appearances King has 152 saves in 188 minutes played.
Both teams are now off for the holiday break. Kenora will return to the ice January 11 when they begin a series against the Red Lake Miners. More details to be released by the SIJHL.
