Two weeks after hosting the first of four KJHL showcase events the Cross Lake Islanders returned to home ice last weekend. By Sunday night, and a pair of victories, the Islanders look poised to challenge for a league championship.
Cross Lake welcomed the first place OCN Storm to begin their four point week handing them their first loss of the season 5-2. Treymian Trout scored twice while adding a helper to lead the home side. Keith Monias also scored a pair while Dennis Scratch contributed two assists. Goaltender Peter Ross stopped 51 shots to earn the victory while his counterpart Braxton Constant made 46 saves in a losing effort.
The following day saw the three-time defending champion Peguis Juniors at Cross Lake Arena. The teams battled all game long with Tyrome Spence opening scoring. The Islanders got a double dose of Dennis Scratch to take the lead at the 8:25 mark of the first. Not to be outdone Spence would add a second marker before intermission to even things at 2-2.
Peguis would take a lead early into the second when Ethan Daniels scored on the power play. The advantage wouldn’t last though as Quinton Scratch tied the game again. Ethan Scribe found the back of the net at 12:20 to make it 4-3, but Spence would complete his hat trick at 9:35 of the period to even things again 4-4.
Juniors players may have been feeling some fatigue in the third and the Islanders picked up their pace outshooting the visitors 15-9. Keith Monias scored the game winner at 16:42 before Armando Evans added another at 4:34. Dennis Scratch also netted a hat trick in the final minute to make the final score 7-4.
