Three games, three shutouts. That is what rookie goaltender Jet Greaves has accomplished in his Junior hockey career with the Guelph Hurricanes. The 16-year old stopped 38 shots on Sunday to down the defending Sutherland Cup champion Elmira Sugar Kings 1-0.
In a penalty-filled game Guelph scored what turned out to be the game winner in the first period when Mathieu Mercier scored with a five-on-three advantage. For the game the Hurricanes were just one-for-nine on the powerplay, but on this day it was enough.
Elmira, who raised their championship banner in a pregame ceremony, had plenty of chances throughout the game pounding 28 shots in the final two periods. The Sugar Kings powerplay would finish scoreless on eight opportunities thanks to the team defense and some timely saves by Greaves.
In his three games played Greaves has made 83 saves helping Guelph (3-0-1-0) to a strong start in the GOJHL Midwestern standings.
The Hurricanes will make their home debut on Thursday welcoming division rival Listowel Cyclones (4-0-0-0) to Sleeman Centre. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
