Guelph, St. Mary’s tie in showcase finale

Gameday two for the Guelph Hurricanes again came early in the morning as the GOJHL Showcase continues at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre in Brantford. The opponent was the St. Mary’s Lincolns of the Western Conference.

Nick Jung scored early in the game to give St. Mary’s a 1-0 lead in what turned out to be a otherwise uneventful first period. Each team had just six shots on net after 20 minutes.

The Hurricanes offense picked up the pace in the second frame and were rewarded at 17:50 when Connor LePage found the back of the net. Guelph continued to outplay the Lincolns and took the lead at 3:24 when Braydon Munn scored an unassisted goal. The score remained 2-1 at intermission. Shot totals had the Hurricanes with a 20-13 advantage.

Anthony Mota kept the good vibes going with an early third period goal to make it a 3-1 game. That is where things stood until the 8:48 mark when Clayton Lewis scored the first of two goals in a :36 span. St. Mary’s took the lead at 7:28 when Kenny Chisholm continued the Lincolns rally.

Despite a huge momentum swing the Hurricanes would continue to battle and with 2:01 remaining on the clock LePage scored his second of the game to tie the game at 4-4. That is the way it would end after 60 minutes.

Neither team could score in the 10 minutes of overtime so both earn a point in the GOJHL standings. Final shot totals were GUE=34, StM=25.

The Hurricanes will return to Brantford on Thursday to face the 99ers in GOJHL action. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
