RMJHL Playoffs Preview

Playoff hockey has arrived in the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League. After a 40-game regular season the top four teams are now ready to battle for the league championship.

Aspen Leafs (26-10-4), who won the inaugural league title last season, are the second seed this year. After a mostly up-and-down season which saw the club go 3-4 during the month of January the Leafs are on a roll winning their last 11 games. Aspen needed every victory to clinch home ice finishing tied with the Steamboat Wranglers (26-10-4). The Leafs won the head-to-head series winning five of ten games. Steamboat also won five games, but two came in overtime.

First year club Wranglers enter the playoffs riding an eight-game win streak. They have had success against both the Leafs and Miners and could be contenders in their first playoffs.

Leading the Wranglers offense is Kameron Fink (49 points) and Jack McNamara (47 points). Ten other players have double-digit point totals for a balanced attack.

Pikes Peak Miners have to be considered the favorite after a 32-8-0 season. The club didn’t lose their first game until December 2 winning their first 18 games. The Miners did go 4-4 in the last eight games, but all four wins were against Colorado Rampage – their first round opponent.

That December 2 Miners loss did come at the hands of the Rampage, who needed overtime in their final game to clinch the final playoff spot. In ten games against the Miners Colorado picked up three points going 1-8-1.

In a best-of three series anything can happen! Playoff action begins on Friday!
