The race for the second seed and home ice for the opening round of the Rocky Mountain Junior Hockey League playoffs is tight. With just two weeks remaining in the regular season Steamboat Wranglers (22-10-1-4) took a one-point advantage on idle Aspen Leafs (22-10-1-3) by sweeping the Colorado Thunderbirds in a two-game weekend series.
Steamboat opened the weekend with a 4-0 shutout behind a 24-save effort from Cole Kohut. Four different goal scorers helped the Wranglers to victory in a dominant team effort. Shot totals for the game were 42-24.
The following night Kohut came close to back-to-back shutouts with the Wranglers carrying a 3-0 lead into the final period. Zach Dym, Jack McNamara and Kameron Fink provided the offense in the Saturday night affair.
The shutout streak would come to an end at 15:05 of the third when Thunderbirds forward Anthony Flores found the back of the net. Kohut would finish the game with 29 saves and 115 minutes of scoreless hockey.
Steamboat will wrap their regular season next weekend with a pair of games at Foothills Ice Arena against the Thunderbirds who are in a playoff chase of their own. With five games left to play the T-birds trail the Colorado Rampage by three points for the fourth and final playoff spot.
