With just five weeks remaining in the RMJHL regular season Pikes Peak Miners (28-4-0-0) have almost clinched the title and top seed for the playoffs. The chase for second place is a tight contest between Steamboat and Aspen and last weekend the Wranglers let it be known that they are contenders.
Hosting the high-flying Miners for two games has been a difficult task for everyone the past few months, but the first-year club Wranglers were up to the challenge taking two points over the weekend. It would be the first road loss of the season for Pikes Peak, who won the weekend opener in familiar fashion 8-1.
League leading scorer Kole Mudra scored twice and added two assists while Trevor Checketts notched three points. Goaltender Matty Taylor made 37 saves in earning his 12th game of the season while improving on his .937% goals against average.
Game two of the series saw the host team stun the Miners 2-1 behind two second period goals. Jack McNamara and Sean Moleschi scored for Steamboat while Cole Kohut stopped 34 of 35 shots in the team effort.
