Third Period Penalties Cost Willmar

Willmar WarHawks traveled north to Breezy Point for their NA3HL season opener on Friday night, but came up short on the scoreboard losing 5-3. It was the second victory of the season for the North Stars who enjoyed the atmosphere of the home crowd.

A slow start had the WarHawks looking at a 2-0 deficit at the 16:45 mark of the opening period, but a last minute goal scored by Jacob Dobberstein gave Willmar momentum going into the locker room.

Two goals from Kane Tourumi and some solid goaltending by Elliot Gerth gave the visitors a 3-2 advantage at second intermission.

Third period penalties would be the demise of the WarHawks as Breezy Point would finally capitalize on the advantage to take the lead at 17:54. A second major penalty against Willmar was whistled in the final minute and the North Stars scored another to secure the win.

A total of 52 minutes of penalties were issued to the WarHawks in the game, while Breezy Point totaled just 10 minutes.

Willmar continue their two-game road trip on Saturday when they travel to Rochester to take on the Ice Hawks. Game time at the Rochester Rec Center is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
