A successful first season will come to a conclusion this weekend when the Midwest Basketball League crown a champion in Minneapolis. Six teams will meet at the Sports Center to find out who is the top MBL team of 2016.
Today, the minor league announced its’ first league award winners along with First, Second and Third All-League winners.
For his outstanding play on the court, the league has named Zach Payton league Player of the Year. At 6’5 the guard/small forward has done it all for his team, the Indiana Fury. Payton led all league scorers at 35.9 points per game while adding 12.5 rebounds and 8.8 assists.
Honored by the award, Payton was quick to thank the people involved in his journey.
“First and foremost I wanna Thank God My Lord & Savior – the inventor of this beautiful gift & passion that he has given me for the game of basketball.”
“Secondly, I want to thank my mother and my father. When everyone said write him off. They still believed. Thirdly, I have to thank my teammates & coaches. They make me look better than what I am. I’m probably one of the toughest teammates to have but they stick with me day in & day out.”
Payton also commented on the opportunity to play in the Midwest Basketball League with the Indiana Fury.
“I appreciate the MBL for the professionalism that is shown throughout the league. With all that being said, this [MVP] wasn’t my goal. My teammates and I want the championship trophy to come back to Fort Wayne with us. So by all means we gone make that happen.”
