Four-team Nationals Field Set

The four teams who will compete for the 2016 NJCAA National Championship are set and the matchups are scheduled. Two teams from both Region 3 and Region 13 will play at the two-day event hosted by SUNY Broome in Binghamton, New York.

NJCAAhockey2016Defending national champion and Region 3 kings Erie Community College went a perfect 12-0 in region play to earn the top seed. The Kats (20-4) are on a roll, winners of their past 10 games.

The second seed is Dakota College-Bottineau (15-10) who swept their two-game Region 13 championship series against Williston State College to win the automatic bid. The Lumberjacks are eight-time national champions, but have not won the prize since 2010.

Earning at-large bids to complete the field are Hudson Valley Community College (10-8-1) and Williston State College (11-19). Hudson Valley are the surprise team of the season after finishing 3-10-2 last season. The 2001 champion, HVCC are seeded #3 featuring a roster with just five sophomores.

Last year’s runner-up, Williston State have had an up-and-down season. Always playing a strong schedule, the Tetons got off to a quick start building a 7-3 record after 10 games and were atop the NJCAA Power Rankings. WSC lost 11 of their next twelve games, although many came at the hands of top ACHA clubs. A 3-3 finish before the Region 13 playoffs may provide enough confidence, along with the memory of their late loss to Erie in the championship game last year, to make a run at their third title.
