With just two games played in Week 9 of the Hanover Tachi Junior Hockey League finding one standout performance was difficult. Several players performed well in the games with Mitchell and Steinbach earning victories.
Mitchell Mohawks defeated Springfield Xtreme 4-3 in the first game of the week with another excellent performance by goaltender Luke Friesen (40 saves) holding off a third period comeback by the Xtreme. Mitchell had four different goal scorers with Troy Blad (1 goal, 1 assist) netting the game winner early in the third.
On Saturday Steinbach Jr. Huskies (6-3-0-1) picked up an important two points defeating Red River Mudbugs 5-3. The teams are now tied for second place in the HTJHL standings, one point back of Grunthal Jr. Red Wings (7-4-0-0). Week 8 PoW Ben Plett scored the opening two goals for Steinbach before the Mudbugs tied it in the second. Veteran Mack Penner then scored twice in the third to help the Jr. Huskies win and is this weeks HTJHL Player of the Week.
In nine games this season Penner has scored four goals and four assists. A fourth-year player for the Jr. Huskies, Penner has one championship (2014) under his belt. After coming up short in the finals last season the 20-year old would like to close his Junior career with another.
Everybody has really picked up their play the last few games and we’ve been able to pull out some big wins. We are hoping to continue that in the second half of the year and playoffs.
