Semi-professional club Greys Athletic, a member of the Ryman League, trailed 2-1 to Hampton & Richmond Borough last week. That was before Mark Bentley came on.
Their manager, apparently nicknamed “Super Bento,” substituted himself onto the field in an attempt to shore up the midfield and with a view towards getting back into the game. Little did he know he would be embarking on a journey that would wrap up with the 37-year-old validating his nickname.
He scored a header off a corner to level the score at 2-2. Then, with his goalkeeper having been sent off with nine minutes to go, he donned the gloves and awkwardly saved a penalty (albeit, a pretty awful penalty). They defended the even scoreline a man down for nine minutes, and to cap it all off, Greys ended up winning on a last-minute goal from teammate Joao Carlos that proved the final kick…
