Two-time defending national champion Williston State will be traveling to New York this weekend in attempt to win another title. The champions of Region 13, the Tetons will attempt to win their third-straight championship on the East Coast.
Number two-seeded Williston State College (14-17) will face off with the tournament host, third-seeded SUNY Broome Community College (13-8), in one semifinal on Saturday. Top-seeded Erie Community College (22-3) will face Mohawk Valley Community College (6-12-1) in the other semifinal. Winners will then play on Sunday afternoon for the championship. All games are scheduled for the SUNY Broome Ice Center in Binghamton.
First-year head coach John Bowkus stepped in last Fall for the Tetons after former coach Seamus Gregory took the head coaching job at Northland College (NCAA Division III). The roster features four players each from Minnesota and North Dakota, and includes players from New York, Florida, California, Oregon, British Columbia and Alberta.
An overall record of 14-17 may not look like a championship-type team, but with just two junior college teams in the West (Dakota College-Bottineau is the other), the Tetons play the majority of their games against four-year ACHA programs. Williston State (enrollment of 1,012) team schedule featured games against Colorado, Colorado State, Utah and Weber State, all with enrollment of 25,000-35,000. Other opponents included Aurora University, Midland University, Minot State and North Dakota State.
