With a CONCACAF Champions League spot on the line, the U.S. Open Cup has some extra meaning. Two clubs from NASL still dream of raising the USOC trophy and competing in the top club competition in the region. Carolina RailHawks have tournament victories over Charlotte Eagles (USL PRO), Chivas USA (MLS) and LA Galaxy (MLS) to earn their spot in the quarterfinals. They will host yet another MLS club next, FC Dallas on July 8.
The Atlanta Silverbacks made history in the fifth round, winning on the road and finishing the final half-hour with just eight players on the pitch. Holding a 2-0 lead on host Colorado Rapids, an incident in the 62′ involving several players from both sides resulted in four players shown red cards. Silverbacks coaches Eric Wynalda and Ricardo Montoya were ejected as well leaving Atlanta without a bench coach. Colorado were awarded a PK in the 75′, but the Silverbacks held on to win 2-1.
