Our second week of featuring the clubs of MASL features a Division 2 match between FC Shango and Newcastle. FC Shango currently sit second in the Division 2 table in pursuit of promotion. Newcastle are sixth (of ten).
About FC Shango: formed in 1991, the club have been a mainstay in the top divisions of MASL for several years. Team manager/player Mat Knudson has been with the club all 22 years.
FC Shango were the Division 2 champions in 2002, but as the league expanded to six divisions Shango remained in Division 2 the following year. In the period following (2003-2011) the club finished in the top five of the table each year, other than 2008 and 2010 (7th). After narrowly missing being relegated in 2012 (FC Shango finished 3 points above bottom) the team were back in contention last summer with a fourth place finish.
About Newcastle: 2004 Division 4C winner. 2009 Division 3 winner. Based and playing out of Ham Lake, Newcastle gained promotion to Division 2 in 2013 when they finished runner-up in Division 3. Newcastle previously played in Division 2, but were relegated in 2011.
