A project born just two years ago, the Chicago Mustangs indoor soccer club have come a long way. In just two seasons of competing in the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL), the Mustangs have compiled an overall record of 26-5 and will host the 2014 Ron Newman Cup championships in March. With just one regular season game remaining Chicago (15-0) are attempting to complete an undefeated PASL season.
Three players have stood out this season, leading the Mustangs offense to a league-high 179 goals. No stranger to followers of Mexican minifootball, Efrain “Wilo” Martinez joined the Mustangs this season after finishing the final seven games for Rio Grande Valley in the 2012-13 season. A two-time league scoring champion with Club Tlaquepaque 2000 (LMFR Pro), Martinez has been a consistent producer for Chicago. Through 15 games ‘Wilo’ has 35 goals along with 19 assists (54 points), which is fourth highest among league scorers. The 28-year old forward is also a crowd favorite, known for his goal celebrating acrobatics.
Ecuador-born Bryan Moya has taken his indoor game to a new level in 2013-14. A rookie season with 21 points (20 goals), was a solid debut for the New York Red Bulls Academy product. Currently showing totals of 36 goals and 15 assists, Moya is fifth in league scoring. At just 20-years old, Moya could have a future playing professional football outdoors as well.
Veteran Miguel Vaca is part the trio of top league scorers, tied with teammate Moya in points with 48 (30 goals, 18 assists). A member of the Guerreros de la Raza (LMFR Pro) championship teams, Vaca basically has played the indoor game year-around.
Anchoring the defense for Chicago is another veteran of Guerreros de la Raza, goalkeeper Jesus Flores. In the Mustangs most recent victory over the Wichita B-52’s Flores broke the PASL all-time record for most victories (14) by a goalkeeper in one season, breaking the mark set by Detroit Waza Flo keeper Joe Kapinos last season. His 5.13 GAA is good enough for fourth in the league among goalies with 10 or more appearances. Flores has played every minute of every game this season for the Mustangs, including one shutout this season. The keeper even scored a goal in the final minute of the January 31 game against Tulsa.
While clinching the Eastern Division crown is a great accomplishment for a second-year club, there is much more to play for in the upcoming weeks. The Mustangs have advanced into the semifinals of the U.S. Open tournament and will face the Cleveland Freeze on Sunday, February 22. Game time at Grand Arena is 4:05 PM. The grand prize is the Ron Newman Cup, which will be hosted by the Mustangs on March 15-16.
