Century College did not have the type of regular season it had hoped for, but the NJCAA Division III playoffs were a new beginning. After finishing with an official record of 6-11-1 the Wood Ducks defeated Bismarck State College 2-0 in the Region 13 semifinals. First half goals from freshman Simer Sho (Como Park HS, St. Paul, MN) and forward Zach Wilmes (Park HS, Cottage Grove, MN), his 22nd goal of the year, were enough to advance to the championship game.
In the Region 13 championship game, Century College would face their conference rival Anoka-Ramsey CC, a side the Wood Ducks had lost to twice (1-2 and 0-1) during the regular season. The Golden Rams (12-2-1), ranked #10 in the national NJCAA Division III poll, defeated Riverland CC 3-1 in their semifinal.
Two first half goals were all the Wood Ducks needed in the final. Wilmes’ Park HS teammate Cody Newton (23′) scored first before Wilmes (31′) added his own just eight minutes later to take command of the match. Century goalkeeper Christian Espitia (Minnesota TwinStars FC) made seven saves for the clean sheet.
Century College will host the District C championship on Saturday, November 2 at noon. Their opponent will be the Region 4 champion, Joliet Junior College (9-5-1) of the North Central Community College Conference (N4C). Joliet finished second in the N4C league before defeating Madison College and Triton College in the Region 4 tourney.
The District C winner will advance to the NJCAA Division National Championships on November 14-17 in New York.
