The Minnesota Gophers women’s soccer team pulled off a huge upset today, defeating 7th-ranked Penn State 1-0 in Minneapolis. It was just the fourth victory all-time against Penn State. The Nittany Lions are the 15-time consecutive defending Big Ten champions and held a record of 10-1-1 (4-0 Big Ten) coming into the match.
A goal by sophomore Haley Helverson in the 16′ was all that was needed by Minnesota, who improved to 9-3-1 (2-2-1 Big Ten) overall this season. The win was important for Minnesota in their pursuit of a Big Ten Tournament berth. Eight of the 12 teams will advance to the conference tournament.
