The 2013 Big Ten Conference season is in full-swing this weekend as all 12 teams are in league action. 11 of the 12 teams have winning records going into conference play with three teams currently ranked in the NCAA Division Top 25 poll. Preseason favorite and defending conference champion Penn State are currently ranked #9 in the nation. Michigan (#15) and Wisconsin (#24) are also in the top 25 while Ohio State and Minnesota also received votes in the most recent poll.
An early season surprise, Minnesota has a 7-1-0 record with victories over Toledo, North Dakota State, Illinois State, Iowa State, LSU, Mississippi and Jacksonville. Their lone defeat came at 8th-ranked Florida. Head Coach Stefanie Golan has a roster with just three seniors, including standout defender MacKenzie Misel. A team captain, Misel has played every minute of every match the past two seasons. Other top players include junior midfielder Katie Thyken and sophomore Haley Helverson.
Minnesota will open their season against Indiana on Saturday, September 21 in Bloomington. Game time is scheduled for 5 PM. Follow the Gophers on Twitter at @GopherSoccer.
