After a regular season and regional playoffs, the 57-team National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) has come down to two clubs: RVA Football Club and Sonoma County Sol. The NPSL Championship will be played in Richmond on Sunday at 7 PM (ET). The match will stream live via online PPV ($5.95) here: http://www.meridix.com/everywhere.php?liveid=TourbeauSports3
The host club, RVA FC, reached the final by winning the South Region Playoff. Finishing undefeated at 6-2-0 in regular season play, RVA FC defeated a former NPSL champion in the Regional semifinals. A 5-3 victory over 2011 champ Jacksonville United FC advanced RVA to the Region Final against defending South Region champ Chattanooga FC. An early second half goal by Josh Grant (James Madison University) was all RVA needed in the 1-0 win.
In the NPSL National Semifinal, RVA FC played host to the Midwest Champ, Erie Admirals SC. A dominating 4-0 win earned the first-year club a spot in the National match. RVA FC goal-scorers were Virginia Commonwealth University striker Kharlton Belmar (2), Josh Grant and Gene Daniels (Virginia Commonwealth University).
Standing in the way of a perfect season for RVA FC is northern California NPSL-power Sonoma County Sol. Established in 2004, Sonoma County have reached the NPSL Nationals five times (2005, ’07, ’08, ’09, ’13) and were the 2009 National Champions. A 4-time U.S. Open Cup competitor, the Sol were crowned USASA Open Cup champions in 2006.
Undefeated (9-3-0) champions of the Northern Flight regular season, Sonoma County Sol advanced to the NPSL Final by winning the West Region Playoff over San Diego Flash (3-0) and rival Sacramento Gold FC (3-1). Sonoma County played host to defending NPSL Champion FC LVU Sonic in their national semifinal, winning 3-2 on a stoppage-time bicycle kick goal by Brenton Frame (Sonoma State University).
