History was made on December 30 when the El Paso Rhinos took the floor for the very first time as the team made its Major Arena Soccer League 2 debut. The expansion side made the 280+ mile trek north to Rio Rancho where they defeated the New Mexico Runners 13-8.
Edgar Perez put his name in the franchise history books by scoring the first-ever goal for El Paso at 12:52 of the first quarter.
The two teams went back-and-forth for the first three quarters exchanging goals. With the score tied at 7-7 El Paso went on a five-goal run to take command in the final frame and clinch the victory.
Perez led the Rhinos offense scoring four goals while adding two assists. Mario Arrieta found the back of the net three times while Pedro Cajtaneda added two goals and a pair of assists. Goalkeeper Moises Munoz earned the historic victory.
Jaime Rodriguez led all scorers with five goals in a losing effort. Nate Yeager was in net for the Runners.
