Sprint car driver Matt Johnson claimed a title on August 19 winning the IMCA RaceSaver Minnesota Sprint Series. The 18-year old from St. Peter, Minnesota finished on top with a 37-point margin over former tour champion Brett Allen. 2021 series champion Trevor Serbus finished in third place.
In just his third season in a sprint car, Johnson has shown consistency this year with 20 top ten finishes in 28 starts to-date. He closed out the series at Arlington Raceway by winning the heat race then a second place finish in the feature to Bill Johnson – his father.
Trailing Serbus in the points, the younger Johnson closed out the second half of the series on a roll. Following a fourth place finish at Norman County Raceway Matt took third at Princeton on July 14. A runner-up at Arlington the following night had the team rolling heading into the Jackson Nationals.
On August 17 Matt led all 30 laps at Jackson Motorplex to claim the RaceSaver feature on Night 1 of the World of Outlaws event.

“A championship is something I’ve wanted for a very long time now,” commented Matt. “I was thinking it was gonna be a very long time before I got one, but I guess I all the consistency and hard work from my dad, grandpa, Marv, Nate and Mike is what got us those consistent finishes and set me up to take the series points championship.”
One week after winning the series championship Matt was back in victory lane at Arlington Raceway winning the 15-lap feature after starting eighth.
Next up for the Johnson family is a trip to Nebraska for the RaceSaver Nationals at Eagle Raceway. More information can be found at https://www.racesaver.com
