A new-look Schreiber Falcons took to the ice for the first time last week and were 2-0 by the end of the two-game series with the Niipigon Elks. The Lakehead Junior Hockey League games took place at the Thunder Bay Tournament Centre due to COVID-19 restrictions.
In the opener played on December 17 the Falcons offense showed their might with two goals each from Noah Francis and Nolan Desjardins leading the way. Schreiber would go on to win 6-3.
Sawyer Hatton scored twice for Nipigon who were outshot in the game 52-30. Dylan Intinii scored the other goal for the Elks.
Other offensive leaders for Schreiber included Brock Tipple (goal and assist) while Josh Zgrych chipped in a pair of helpers. Goaltender Peter Daniele made 27 saves to earn the win.
Two days later the teams met once again in Thunder Bay. A similar outcome resulted with the Falcons defeating Nipigon 7-3.
This game was closely contested for the first 40 minutes thanks in part to Elks goaltender Cameron Ceci who made 39 saves in two periods.
With the Falcons holding a 3-2 advantage their offensive pressure finally forced the Elks defense to crack. Schrebier would score four times in the third to cruise to victory. For the game the Falcons put 60 shots on net while holding Nipigon to 31.
Tipple led all scorers with two goals and an assist while Jackson Buffone and Dallan Commissimo each with three helpers. Francis, Zach Bagley, Konner Kuuskivi, Jessie Bylund and Devin Costa all scored for Schreiber, who are 2-0 for the first time in franchise history (their tenth season).
