Canes fall to Siskins in 2OT thriller

Guelph Hurricanes welcomed the Waterloo Siskins to Sleeman Centre Saturday night in a GOJHL matchup. The visitors were looking to extend their points lead in the Midwestern standings in the battle for third place, with Elmira on their heels. Guelph was hoping to see some consistency from a team who has struggled on the offensive end much of the past two months.

Coming off a 4-0 shutout loss at Stratford the previous night, the Hurricanes were happy to find the back of the net at 9:05 of the first when Bradley Smith scored his seventh of the season. Aiden Matekovic and Niki Molson assisted on the opening goal which was the only tally of the first period. Goaltender Jet Greaves made 13 of his 36 saves in the frame to keep the Siskins off the scoreboard.

Team leading scorer Anthony Mota put the Hurricanes in front 2-0 at 6:20 of the second scoring his 18th of the season with helpers from Matthew Chard and Seasmus Mooney. A late powerplay goal had Waterloo back in the game though making it 2-1 at second intermission.

It took just :36 into the third for Guelph to retake a 2-goal advantage when Zach Russell scored with assists from Molson and Mathieu Mercier. It would not be enough this night though as the Siskins scored twice in regulation to send the game to overtime.

Both teams managed four shots on net in the first overtime, but no one could find a winner. The second overtime, which is three-on-three, took just :37 to conclude as Sam Cherry scored on the only shot of the session to give the Siskins a 4-3 double-overtime victory.

Despite the OT loss, Guelph (9-24-1-5) earned a point in the standings and took away some positives. Eight different skaters put up points while the team managed 31 shots on net.

The Hurricanes return to the ice next Sunday, January 28 when they travel to Kitchener for the final time this season. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
